Introduction to a Future Petroleum Engineer

Hi, my name is Tyler Brooking and I was born and raised in Oklahoma. I am 21 years of age and am currently a Junior at the University of Oklahoma. My major is Petroleum Engineering and I am not currently pursuing any minors. I was first attracted to the oil & gas industry because my father was a land man and did abstracts and deeds for property owners of oil wells. I later became more interested in the fact of how much that America and the world demands energy each and every day. The common misconception that oil & gas is just used for making gas and jet fuel is inaccurate. Without it many accessories, plastics, and polymers we enjoy as consumers would not exist, and it is because of this that I am intrigued at this business. In addition, natural gas plants are producing electricity at a far better economic rate than coal and is a much cleaner burning fuel than coal. All in all, these are a few reasons of why I chose to become a petroleum engineer.

My hobbies include golfing, DIY projects, the outdoors, and spending time with my family. I have been an avid golfer since the age of 5 and have loved it ever since. Another thing I consider a hobby of mine are “do it yourself” projects. I enjoy learning how to fix things around a house or car to save myself money or friends and family money. Fishing and hunting are other recreational activities I enjoy when I have the time. And lastly but not least I enjoy spending time with my family, and having “get together’s”. My favorite holiday is always thanksgiving because of the vast amount of food, family, and friends that show up to celebrate it.

In addition, one of my favorite things to do is travel. I enjoy going new places and playing new golf courses wherever I go. There is a golf course just about anywhere you travel and I like to play one in every state, country, or island I visit.

  1. Hi Tyler! Thanks for explaining more about petroleum engineering. I hadn't really thought before about how oil and gas go into other products and so petroleum engineering has wider applicability than just gas companies.

Did someone in your family introduce you to golf as a child, or did you get interested in it through some other way? Where all have you traveled?

  2. Hi Tyler, I myself am a Petroleum Engineer! I enjoyed reading your take on the oil industry and the many misconceptions that come from people regarding the oil industry. My favorite holiday happens to be Christmas though because my family cooks a large prime rib that is extremely good. Also, I enjoy golfing however I am not very good quite yet!

    Nice to meet you!

  3. I tried learning how to golf one time, and really did not enjoy it. Maybe I'll have to give it another try when the weather gets warmer again. I'm curious to know who your favorite Petroleum Engineering professors are, mine is Dr. Moghanloo. If you want an idea for a DIY project, I suggest hanging a whiteboard in your house. I did it, and I find it makes my study time much more effective.

  4. How great that you are able to pursue a career connected to what you saw your father doing, Tyler! I've actually been dealing with land men (and women!) recently because when my mother died last year, I inherited some mineral rights from my grandfather, who was a prospector in west Texas way way way back in the day. It is so complicated! So far, I've gotten a check for $46 ha ha. But I guess you never know; my grandfather thought there was something out there. Or, I guess, under there! And listen, I know this might sound totally dopey, but I am always trying to find connections between people's interests and the topics of this class. Maybe you could design a miniature golf course based on the epics! I know there are Bible-based miniature golf courses (I love miniature golf to tell the truth...), so an Indian epics miniature golf course might be a perfect idea for you to explore! :-)

  5. Hey Tyler! My grandpa actually has some mineral rights himself. He'll get $70 every few months, and we'll jokingly call him the family oil baron. I actually played on my schools golf team in high school. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't very good, but I was on the team. I actually grew up with Lakewood golf course in Ada, lots of water and hills. Imagine a golf course in western Arkansas, and you'll have a pretty good image. Anyways, good luck with your semester, and maybe I'll see you in the quad sometime.

  6. Hey Tyler nice to meet you! I too am a Petroleum Engineer (senior) and from Edmond, OK. That is so great to meet another Petroleum Engineer. Keep pushing through that last junior semester, because wow that whole year was tough. Hopefully by the time you graduate we can see a little bump in oil prices if we are lucky.:) I am right there with you on the DIY projects. I also like to fix up my car when things go wrong because you get to learn and save money. Also it is just kind of fun. I too love playing golf! Haven't been able to much in college, but it's always a blast when I get the chance. That would be a great bucket list item to try and play a course in every one of the U.S. states. It is great to meet you! Keep working hard and best of luck this semester!

  7. Nice to meet you Tyler!
I see you have heard this plenty, but I am a petroleum engineering major as well! I graduate this May, which right now might not be the best time considering the market...haha.
That's very neat that you love golf that much! I have only tried golfing once and it was at Top Golf during my internship. Spoiler alert: I'm terrible!
Family is most important in my life, as I see it is in your as well.
Keep up with it, oil will get better!

  8. Hey Tyler,

You know, it really is true that everywhere you go has a golf course. Two years ago I traveled to Bhutan, a small country in the Himalayas. Even there, our hotel was actually just across the street from the King's own golf course! It was something else, for sure. I bet you would have loved to play through that one!

That's cool that your favorite holiday is thanksgiving, usually people go with either Christmas or Halloween(my personal fav). But it does make me wonder, do you think there are people out there whose favorite holiday is Easter? Or St. Patty's? Oh or even Valentines day?

  9. Tyler, I am glad that you have such strong reasons why you are a Petroleum Engineering major, especially because I feel that a lot of people just choose it for the money, which is never a good reason to choose a career path. The image you took in Carrizo Springs, TX is really nice! I also love golfing and travelling, although I haven’t been able to combine the two often.

  10. It is nice to meet you Tyler! You picked a good major, kinda bad timing though… I am majoring in petroleum engineering as well and am on my senior year. You have some good hobbies! I love to golf too and love spending time with my family. I haven’t ever played golf on vacations, but I bet you have played some awesome courses. Good luck in the rest of your degree!

  11. Hi Tyler, I used to be a Chemical Engineering major till I switched to Biochem for Pre-med, but I loved all of my engineering classes! They were so fun! I live at the Links/Greens so I am sure you have played golf there. (I am that annoying runner always running past the golfers.) I think it is pretty cool that you like to play golf everywhere you go. I can definitely relate to that with running. I am currently working my way up to running a marathon in every state. I have only 8 states, so I have a lot to go but it is fun! It was nice to meet you!

  12. Tyler,
It is nice to meet you. I wish you all the best for your degree in petroleum engineering. I don’t think I would ever be able to get a degree in engineering with good grades. DIY is a live saver sometimes and it is always good to learn to fix things on your own. I am huge DIY projects too. Good luck!

  13. Hi Tyler,

It is a pleasure meeting you. I noticed early on in the semester that there were many petroleum engineering majors! I have never encountered so many inside of one class. I am glad that you explained that petroleum engineers are not just for the oil and gas industry. I used to be involved in an engineering organization, and all of the younger students would go to different classes and workshops finding their niche and asking their selves “is this what I want to do when I grow up?” It was there where I found out the vast capabilities of petroleum engineers, as well as other engineering jobs. I wish you the best and I hope you have a great semester!

  14. Hello Tyler!

It is nice meeting you! It seems there are more and more petroleum engineers in the class! I am a junior in Aerospace Engineering. With two more years left. I love your passion for petroleum engineering especially since most times people go into it for the money. I am TERRIBLE at golf. By golf, I mean Putt Putt of course.

It was nice to meet you!
